Our critter corner explores Mola Mola: We saw 7 Manta’s and 5 Mola Mola in one day in Lembongan, so we thought we would find out Just what is a Mola Mola?

On the conservation front, Shark Savers are doing amazing work in their Campaign to Stop Shark Fin Soup.

Weekly round-up: we just found two new Rhinopias in Lembeh, we are finding lots of pontohi in Bunaken, and the Mola Molas are still around in Lembongan.

This week in Lembeh

Harlequin shrimpSome great Blue Ringed Octopus action once again on the same dive as these gorgeous Harlequin Shrimp! Another excellent round of night dives turning up Starry Night Octopus, Stargazers and Bobbit Worms, plus during the day: Hairy Frogfish, Flamboyant Cuttlefish, four species of Pygmy Seahorse, Colemans Shrimp, Mimic Octopus… Oh, and two new Rhinopias!! (Yes, TWO!). Thanks to Volker for the great photo of the Harlequin Shrimp.

This week in Bunaken

Candy CrabWe have had some rain this week but have had another typical diving week with pontohi seahorses, ornate and halameda ghostpipefish, candy crab, pygmy pipefish, ribbon eels and leaf and devil scorpionfish; and larger stuff including dogtooth tuna and eagle rays. We have also had a rescue course, an advanced course & a few open water courses.

On the DM Intern side, we lost Sara & Tim to Lembongan to continue their DM course, and Steven has taken over being a great help as he continues with his DM course. Happy diving everyone from Two Fish Divers in Bunaken!!
(thanks to Eric for the great photo of a Candy Crab)

Just what is a Mola Mola?

Mola mola at BuyukThis week we saw 5 Mola Mola on 1 dive in Lembongan so I thought that I would find out what a Mola Mola is, and the first thing I discovered is that the Mola Mola is the heaviest bony fish in the world!! (sharks and rays can be heavier, but they’re cartilaginous fish).

The Mola Mola, or ocean sunfish, resembles a big floating blob, and the adult has an average weight of 1,000 kg and is 180cm long (250cm fin to fin).
