Swimming Pool in Bunaken ready for swimmingWe are really please to announce that our new swimming pool in Bunaken is now complete and ready for use!

We started it in Jan with the digging and transport of materials, and it was finally finished on 27 July. We had an official opening by the local village head and community leaders such as the village priest, and we invited all the workers to come and have a swim! Soon after this it was open to guests.

Iain and Brendon ready for the Coelecanth expeditionLast week we undertook our deepest dive yet to 120m. One of our guests Iain visited us with his rebreather and decided to take advantage of the tec diving facilities offered by our sister company BunakenTec. These services include full support for trimix diving on both open circuit and rebreather, and paticipation in deep exploration dives to search for the rare dinosaur fish called the Coelecanth (read previous blog The Coelecanth, Living Fossil in Bunaken).

Brendon is our TEC Manager/Instructor/Diver at BunakenTec, and he organised the 2nd Coelecanth exploration with Iain. He was using his ISC Megaladon electronic rebreather and Iain was using his Inspiration rebreather with the Narced @90 head

After a day of some test dives to 50m, the exploration consisted of 3 deep dives over 3 days:

  • Dive 1 to 90m for 20min with total dive time of 120mins
  • Dive 2 to 100m for 20min with total dive time of 171min
  • Dive 3 to 120m for 17mins with total dive time of 200mins

Iain at 110mFor the full report, please read the BunakeTec blog about the Coelacanth Dive Expedition – July 2012.

What was also very interesting about Iain’s trip was that it showed the range of diving  that this area has to offer for rebreather divers. Before he undertook the expedition, Iain spent 4-5 days doing recreational dives with us around Bunaken, using his rebreather and camera. After the expedition he went to Lembeh and spent another 4-5 days doing recreational dives. Fantastic recreational diving as well as  fantastic TEC diving – what other area gives this range of diving opportunities in one dive holiday?

If you want to find our more about TEC or rebreather diving or Coelencanth expeditions, you can email Brendon(at)TwoFishDivers.com.

We are starting a new series of regular blogs from our DM Interns. The first is from Lewis, he is taking our 6-week Eco-Dm Internship in Bunaken & Lembeh.

Well, where to begin??

Arrived on Lembeh to be welcomed by the friendly dogs that roam the resort, keeping guard and always looking for food.

Followed by one of the many good meals that they have here…really enjoyed the dinners, especially KFC night haha!

Had my first few days of fun diving with Matt to show me around and get acquainted with the totally different type of diving that Lembeh is known for, muck diving. It took me a while to get used to the difference but it is really fun, swimming around looking for the weird and wonderful critters that roam the Lembeh strait! On my first 2 dives, I saw most of the things that people come here to see, Ambon scorpion fish, Lembeh sea dragon, pygmy sea horse, ornate ghost pipefish, robust ghost pipefish and many many others!

Then it was time for the course to begin! With some search and recovery, organising dive cleans and surveying the coral on the house reef.

The most enjoyable thing that I have done with my time in Lembeh is building the artificial reef on the house reef! It came with a few problems and challenges but nothing that me and a pumpkin couldn’t work out and move past. A little mapping of the area then planning where the structures were to go, or building new structures. Moved things about and had fun playing with the massive liftbags that we got brought over from Bunaken to get the job done!

One word of advice for anyone who needs a visa extension though, is to take on of the two fish staff with you to help with translation and to stop you getting very angry at the immigration staff!! Was not the most enjoyable trip to manado that I had but pizza hut worked wonders

Two Fish in Nusa Lembongan, BaliWe are very pleased to announce that we have opened a new resort in Bali! We are open for resort guests right now and our dive operations will start in early-June 2012.

This means that from June 2012, you can enjoy an Indonesian dive safari with one operator offering some of the best diving in the world in Indonesia – Bali, Bunaken AND Lembeh.

Two Fish Divers Resort on Lembongan Island, Bali

The resort is based on an island called Nusa Lembongan, a small island 15 kilometres East of Sanur, south east of Bali. The distance from Sanur to Lembongan is the same as Manado to Bunaken, thats 30-40 minutes by boat so its not far!

Close to Nusa Lembongan are the islands of Nusa Penida and Nusa Ceningan, and around all three islands are great sites for diving.

Bali, Lembongan and Lombok

Manta’s, Mola’s and Great Reefs!

Manta ray in BaliNusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida are home to Manta’s and Mola-mola, this is what initially made Bali famous for diving! There are more than 15 dive sites around these islands, offering a mixture of fantastic hard-corals, colourful soft corals and a range of critters from macro to pelagics, and large schools of fish.

The mainland is about 30-60mins away by boat (same distance as Manado-Bunaken!) and offers 15+ more dive sites for those who are staying longer, including the world-famous Liberty Wreck at Tulamben.

Find out more about the dive sites of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Penida.

Existing Resort

Swimming pool for relaxingWe are renting an existing resort and converting it to our needs, and adding a dive center, compressor room and restaurant. The resort contains 10 rooms so can accommodate 20 guests, and all the rooms will have a/c and hot water. It also has a swimming pool and pool cafe for relaxing after diving!

Prices for staying with us will be similar to our cottages in Bunaken and Lembeh, but we will only be offering breakfast at the resort as there are many restaurants nearby for lunch and dinner.

There is a selection of budget accommodation on the island as well, so we can cater for all tastes!

Professional and local staff

PADI Five star IDC centerWhat makes us special in Bunaken & Lembeh is our 5 star service and mixture of experienced western instructors/managers and local staff, and Two Fish Divers in Bali will be no different.

A few of our staff from Bunaken and Lembeh will help set up the operation in the beginning (eg dive guide Frans from Bunaken, and Ivon who is reception/admin in Lembeh) but we will be hiring mostly new staff supported by regular visits by Two Fish management (Nigel & Febryo):

  • we will start with 4 local dive guides, all having done 1,000′s of dives in the area so have some great experience to share
  • an english instructor/dive manager called Jason will be joining us, he is new to the area but has done 100′s of courses and 1,000″s of dives so he will learn the area pretty quickly
  • a french instructor/dive manager called Laurent will also be joining us. He is a newer instructor with slightly less courses under his belt, but already has more than 1 year experience of running a dive center in Lembongan so knows the area and the island, and will therefore be a great asset to us

With this team we will be able to offer fun diving with experienced dive guides according to our normal high standards, as well as PADI courses with experienced instructors. One exciting thing that we also want to offer are 2-month DM internships over all three locations, more about this later!

Lembongan Island – paradise lost!

Beach on LembonganMany people comment that Nusa Lembongan must be similar to how Bali used to be before major tourism took off – no hawkers, no traffic, relaxed atmosphere and magnificent scenery! It is fast becoming one of Bali’s most popular attractions, a paradise that is a world away from the pollution, hassles and hectic pace of Bali, and the perfect place to put your feet up and relax. Popular with families weary of travel warnings, this island is a safe little spot to enjoy a perfect Bali diving holiday.
