Assistant Instructor Course IDC in Bunaken

/// Assistant Instructor Course

Assistant Instructor course (AI) is 4-5 days long. This course doesn’t have to be taken together with IDC, and can be taken at any time during the year

Curious about teaching scuba diving? The PADI Assistant Instructor course (AI) is the first part of the full PADI Instructor Course (IDC). The second part of the PADI Instructor Course (IDC) is PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI). Taking both the Assistant Instructor course and Open Water Scuba Instructor course (plus the PADI Instructor Exam) leads to certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
The whole IDC takes almost three weeks, however if you don’t have time for the whole Instructor course, you can achieve the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) rating in just 4-5 days.
The AI Course is the most important practical part of the IDC as it is mainly concerned with your teaching skills for teaching PADI courses. Doing the AI Course outside the structure of the IDC gives you the flexibility to learn teaching skills over a longer period of time, without the rigid IDC timetable. The course takes 4-5-days and can be done as a stand-alone course or as an add-on to another course, for example the Divemaster Course / Internship.
Assistant Instructors can function as instructional assistants and independently conduct certain PADI programs. It is therefore also a great way to get more teaching experience before attending your IDC.

The things you taught me last year during my DM/AI internship proved very valuable indeed. Especially the practical experience I got working in a real environment and with real students. This was a great asset during the IDC. Thank you for giving me such a solid foundation for my professional diving career!

Marnix Arnold, Dec 2008
As a PADI Assistant Instructor you will start learning the PADI System of diver education. It is a great way to gain experience and build upon your abilities to organize and supervise scuba diving activities. During the Assistant Instructor course you’ll learn through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations. In the water you’ll have a skill review and assessment, workshops, plus an in-water rescue assessment. In the classroom your Course Director will work with you to develop your skills to prepare and deliver various candidate presentations to improve your teaching skills.
Qualifying as an AI allows you to progress on to the OWSI program and allows you to teach programs like the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty, Project Aware and also conduct certain portions of the Open Water Diver Course.
Prerequisites for Assistant Instructor Course:

  • PADI Divemaster with a minimum of 60 logged dives with Night, Deep and Navigation experience
  • A valid Dive medical (within 12 months)
  • Current EFR / CPR & 1st Aid training Certification (within the last 24 months)
  • Minimum 18 years of age

Instructor Development Course IDC in Bunaken

/// Instructor Development Course

Instructor Development Course (IDC) is conducted over 12-14 days in Bunaken. Check out our schedule of IDC courses that coincide with the Instructor Exam in Manado.

The IDC course is conducted over 4 distinct sessions:

E-Learning Presentations either Online or live – 2 days
Before the 2 day prep course, candidates need to have completed either the E-Learning portion of the IDC on-line, OR
Participate in these on-line presentations, presented live by the PADI Course Director or Staff Instructors over 2 earlier days. This will be arranged before the EFR Instructor and IDC 2 day prep courses.

Save 2 days of your IDC and go fun diving in Bunaken or Lembeh for 2 days!! Only for those who have booked one of our IDC packages and have already done the IDC eLearning program before arrival.
Emergency First Response Instructor Course – 1 day
(includes Care For Children)
Before you can be certified as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, you need to have first completed the EFR Instructor course. The EFR Instructor course only takes one day to complete.
IDC candidates who still need to complete this requirement, may join the EFR Instructor course which starts two days before the IDC two day prep course.
IDC 2 Day Prep Course – 2 days
With the E-Learning segment of your IDC completed, we begin with the IDC Prep Course. This program has the following main goals:

  • Ensure that all IDC candidates have all the necessary PADI materials and dive equipment required
  • We do 2 confined water skill sessions to practice the 20 skills from the PADI Divemaster course so you go into the IDC sharp
  • We do dive theory workshops/presentations on topics including Physics, Physiology, Equipment, Decompression theory and Skills & Environment
  • Practice exams
PADI IDC Core Program – 8 days
This section is all about handling students in the water. You will have five days of in-water focused teaching sessions.
We have scheduled the IDC so that you will have an easy last day before the IE starts. This last day will give you an opportunity to do some fun dives in Bunaken, and these dives are FREE. You also have the option of taking a FREE Discover TEC Deep Dive, and you can upgrade this to a Discover Rebreather Diving. This way you can gain some experience in the techinical part of recreational diving.

Additional teaching workshops during the IDC include:

  • Students with mask clearing problems
  • Preparing CESA lines or surface support stations
  • Teaching the Controlled Emergency Swimming Ascent safely
  • Lift Bag use and knot tying
  • Special Risk Management workshop and Video of dive accidents
  • Tec & Rebreather Diving

These workshops are NOT standard IDC practice.They are additional workshops added into Two Fish Divers IDC Programme by our PADI Course Director Brendon Sing. These workshops will give you more experience on teaching skills safely and efficiently.

Our overall objective is to teach you how to be a GREAT PADI Instructor.
Passing the IE is a secondary objective, it is NOT the primary objective, and this is what makes us different from other IDC courses. We believe that if you teach IDC students how to be GREAT instructors, then the IE is just a formality.
International- our IDC programs usually consist of an international group of candidates. Therefore the IDC is conducted in English.
100% pass rate- we have a 100% pass rate on the instructor examinations. Your success in our programme is a guarantee – if you fail the IE we will give you a free IDC before re-taking the IE.

Master Scuba Diver Trainer MSDT Course in Lembeh

/// Master Scuba Diver Trainer

Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) course is over 3-4 days in Lembeh. Can be taken at the end of the IDC/IE or at any time during the year

The Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating sets you apart from other dive instructors by showing your commitment to continuing your dive training and being prepared to help others continue their training as well. When your students wish to continue their training towards Master Scuba Diver level, you will be the instructor who can get them there, as you will be able teach 5 additional Speciality Courses as well as all other PADI courses.
Many dive operators prefer to employ instructors with MSDT rating, as the rating shows proficiency in teaching at least 5 Speciality Courses as well as 25 Open Water Certifications.
You also get to teach specialty diver courses – which opens the door to lots of fun while working.
The MSDT is a very practical program, and over the 3-4 days you will do 6-9 dives as part of the program. It is hands on training in 5 additional instructor specialty courses.
For each speciality, you will watch the professional DVD, this gives you the objective of the course and tips on how to teach it. There are some knowledge reviews to be done, and the Course Director will take you through some training exercises on land, before practicing on 1 or 2 dives.
The Enriched Air Specialty Instructor and Shark Awareness Specialty Instructor Courses are provided for FREE as part of our IDC.
For the MSDT Rating, another five Specialty Instructor Courses need to be selected from:

  • Deep Diver Specialty Instructor (2 dives)
  • Digital Under Water Photography Specialty Instructor (2 dives)
  • Wreck Diver Specialty Instructor (2 dives)
  • Search & Recovery Specialty Instructor (2 dives)
  • Night Diver Specialty Instructor (1 dive)
  • Navigation Specialty Instructor (2 dives)
  • Multi-Level Specialty Instructor (1 dive)

You will also get teaching experience in 2 or 3 of the best dive locations in Indonesia!

Many dive operations use the term ‘Internships’ loosely, and it may have different meanings from one center to another.
In some operations, internships are offered where the dive center provides the courses for free and then the candidates will work for free in order to pay back the cost of the course. It seems like a great deal to the students, but in reality the students do not get as much benefit or attention as they should. Some examples of such instructor experiences:

  • Dive centers will teach intern courses when they have spare time when they feel like it
  • Intern students are not a priority for the dive operation
  • Very little attention is given to structure and scheduling for interns
  • Interns get the jobs to do that other staff members do not want to do, eg. carrying and loading tanks, loading boats, sweeping floors, cleaning wash tanks or boat toilets
  • In most cases, intern students get frustrated because their courses are not structured and organized, and when they want to leave the dive operation will demand that they pay them for the full price of the normal course package anyway

We do not this type of internship at Two Fish Divers for several good reasons. In our opinion, the Instructor course is a professional level in diving. Instructors should be treated with respect as future professional dive leaders, this is why it’s even more important that they are part of a professional organized Instructor Internship programme focused on their candidates and their training. This helps to shape future dive leaders as well as instructors.

At Two Fish Divers we try and achieve this with all our Instructor Internships. We do not offer “work off free courses”, but our Instructor Internship / IDC Platinum Package offers the candidates an opportunity to gain teaching experience under supervision and with professional guidance after their IDC.

Two Fish Divers Instructor Development Programme

How it all fits together

/// Foundations

The foundation of PADI instructor development is the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). The program consists of two parts — the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Combining the three-day AI course and the four-day OWSI program into a continuous program makes up a seven day IDC.

Successfully completing an AI course allows instructor candidates to earn the PADI Assistant Instructor rating which authorizes them to function as instructional assistants and independently conduct certain PADI programs. AI course completion also qualifies candidates to participate in an OWSI program.

/// Open Water Scuba Instructor

Successfully completing the OWSI program (or an entire IDC) makes candidates eligible to participate in a PADI Instructor Examination (IE).

The IE is a completely evaluative program that tests the instructor candidate’s teaching ability, dive knowledge, skill level, understanding of the PADI System, attitude and professionalism. Instructor candidates become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors only after successfully completing an IE.

PADI IEs are standardized, objective evaluations conducted by Instructor Examiners representing one of PADI’s international offices.

/// Life After IE

Once you are an instructor your training does not stop there. Various instructor-level continuing education courses are offered, these include Specialty Instructor training courses, Tec Deep Instructor training (TEC) courses, and Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT).

Each IDC Programme is followed by the optional PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer Course (MSDT) over 3-4 days. See above for full details.

IDC Staff Instructor Courses train qualified Master Scuba Diver Trainers to conduct AI Courses and IDCs. These are conducted in conjunction with every IDC program.
