Peter and Sebastian from Germany have just spent 18 days with us at Two Fish and did a little more than just diving. Both from University Landau in Germany, Peter is currently working on his PhD. and Sebastian assisting him with research as an internship for his diploma in Environmental Sciences.
As part of their research, they collected samples of sediment from different depths and dive sites in both Lembeh and Bunaken, and then sifting through looking for a specific family (Turridae) of tiny Gatropods (sea snails). The aim of the study is to compare different areas in the Indo-Pacific by analyzing the diversity with in this highly diverse family.
Peter also thinks that he has found several new species – four in Lembeh and up to six in Bunaken – but he will have to wait until returning to Germany to be sure.
From here they will continue on to the Togean Islands to make a complete survey of that area as well. Good luck and keep us informed on the outcome of the new discoveries!
Saturday 25th of September was International Cleanup day which was a huge success! We started with the beach and mangrove area around the Two Fish resort, and later that afternoon we took 30 volunteers (staff & guests) to the pier in Bunaken and joined several other dive centres from around the island in a mass cleanup.
We had a surface crew that consisted of a number of snorkelers, some of which were from a neighbouring resort who wanted to do their bit, and a dive crew doing the area from 14m up.
We collected everything from plastic packaging, bottles, building materials, clothing to diapers and tin cans.
It was a great team effort and we would like to thank everyone for taking part and doing their bit for our ocean. All the data has now been collected and submitted to Project Aware and we are pleased to announce that after weighing all the rubbish that was collected, we managed to collect 628kg!
Last night they had a party in our beach cafe to celebrate, the picture here is early on as they are still standing up!
Joining them in the celebration was Philippa who just passed her Divemaster!
(In picture are Philippa, Luke, Sam, Dion, Meagan and Course Director Brendon).
Congratulations to the four new instructors and new divemaster!
Just wanted to say congratulations to Charig and Jop on comlpleting their Open Water courses with us.
Charig had to leave yesterday but Jop is stayed on for another day, he loves diving so much that he decided to do the Deep Diver from the advanced course and is now exploring the walls of Bunaken to 30m!
Hope to see you both again, happy diving!
They spent the week fun diving and doing some courses – EFR, Advanced course & Nitrox speciality.
On their last night we gave them a special romantic dinner on the beach by the sea with a nice bottle of red wine (sorry, it was Argentinian wine!).
We had great fun with them, and we hope that they will visit us on their anniversary next year!
