Gym membership not required….On the first day of my Divemaster, Markus – one of the course instructors – asked me the reasons behind me wanting to join the program. It’s nearly 30 years since I started diving and I’ve been fortunate to do 1000’s of dives around the world. But it’s always good to develop your skills in any field, so I think that was one of the main reasons – to become a better diver and divemaster. In just the first seven days I’ve learned so much and I’m loving every second of it. Highlights have been assisting with my first Discover Scuba students. Six Indonesian people came over from Manado for the day and after a short time in the pool we escorted them on two shallow open water dives. They were so thrilled at seeing the marine life and departed Bunaken with happy smiles.
Next was helping on an Advanced Open water program with two ladies who had only recently finished their beginner’s course. Helping them developing their diving skills was really rewarding and they were lovely people to have on the island. Once they were qualified, I took them for the first dive which I guided on my own. It was one of those beautiful wall dives that Bunaken is famous for with an abundant of fish and turtles. It’s also part of my responsibility to help preparing the dive boat and load tanks, etc…, which has been something I never thought I’d enjoy as much as I do. And the added bonus is that already in just one week I’m fitter than I’ve been for a while. This life makes going to gym seem a very dull way of keeping healthy.
Yours,
Ian
