We’ve been having fun in Amed this week, not least with the bumphead parrotfish at the Liberty wreck. The Liberty is known for it’s schooling bumpheads, although normally they are seen only at sunrise and sunset as they sleep there, during the day they normally leave the wreck to avoid divers (We see them more than most of course, as unlike the vast majority of centres in Amed and Tulamben we have a boat – so we can drift off to their daytime home to finish our dive instead of needing to return to the shore exit point in the opposite direction). But as it’s low season (and we have a friendly neighborhood volcano) there are not so many divers around, so the bumpheads are hanging around on the wreck during the day too. This week, for example, we took guest Jon for his first dive in 4 years, and we were lucky enough to spend 10 minutes with bumpheads just hanging out next to us getting some cleaner fish love. I’m not sure the large hawksbill turtle next to us was happy to be ignored but Jon was far more impressed with the bumpheads!
