When the wind and the waves put an end to ocean diving, there is always time for ‘sciencey diving.’ On Wednesday 25th July, a ‘sciencey diving’ chat was hosted at Two Fish, Lembongan. The event was advertised publicly, and we had some our guests in the resort attend as well as other tourists to the island.
The ‘Sciencey Diving Chat’ was a guided discussion lead by the participants interests and questions. On hand to guide the discussion and answer questions were marine biologists and local dive guides Valentine Kumbara Paramitha and Sam Silalahi, as well as certified scientific diver Donal.
The discussion commenced with an introduction to the geographical location and highlighted the benefits of the location. Sam spoke about the Coral Triangle and identified the areas with the highest biodiversity, of which Nusa Lembongan and Penida are situated. Donal followed this by talking about the Indonesian Through Flow, mentioning how the nutrient rich waters flow through the local region.
As the ‘Sciencey Chat’ progressed the participants interests began to focus on corals. Sam used different coral skeletons to illustrate the different structural features. Then the discussion began to focus on the reef fish. Valentine was on hand to share some interesting facts, explain the biological characteristics of fish, the classification features for fish, and to identify and show the participants some of the local reef fish they may see while out diving.
A wonderful time was had by both participants and hosts. Keep an eye out, hopefully more to come in the future!! 😊
