The Hammerheads are here!
Weekly greetings from South Lombok. What a week it has been with trips to Belongas Bay and epic hammerhead sightings! It doesn’t get more “close-up” than Jay nearly swimming straight into the side of six hammerheads as they passed by!
Did you know that Belongas Bay is a hotspot for hammerhead sharks and schooling hammerheads? The Belongas Bay dive site “Magnet” is an incredible open ocean pinnacle which attracts hammerheads seasonally – and the time is NOW!
The Magnet is an adrenaline pumping experience which proves the adage “no current, no fish” almost every time! At this time of year, we not only see great and scalloped hammerheads, but we also spot mobula rays, other shark species and literally, tons of fish!
If drifts and currents make you tired just thinking about them, our local diving here in Sekotong has been equally impressive this week. At our unspoilt, coral-rich Sekotong dive sites we have had sightings of some of Indonesia’s most exquisite critters including a tiger mantis shrimp (Lysiosquillina maculata), pygmy seahorses (Hippocampus bargibanti), and all manner of other macro delights.
As some of you will know our dive shop here is a little more “diverse” than other dive shops. Sure, we have sun, sea and sand but we also have a few “extras”. This week, for instance, we created some new signs for the wash tanks. Alongside the usual “please rinse your dive gear” and the ever-important “Replace your DUSTCAPS!!!” there was a slightly less familiar sign requesting that our wash tanks not be used for the washing of “dogs, cats, chickens or cows”… Welcome to life at the Dive Farm – AKA Two Fish, South Lombok. That’s why you’ll find a lid on wash tanks in these parts. Don’t mind the farmer, he’s also the security guard!
Two Fish Divers South Lombok tally for this week: 6 sharks, 1 tiger mantis shrimp, 2 cuttlefish, 3 pygmy seahorses, 2 cats, 3 dogs, 1 small herd of cows and many many chickens. Oh and “Bubble” our useless but adorable guard dog puppy says hi 😉
