One of the things my mother always told me, ” Leave a place better than you found it. ” It is a moto that I wish that all mothers passed on to their children. In 2017 we introduced a bi-weekly beach cleanup at Two Fish Divers Gili Air. Every other Thursday we and fellow islanders, guests, and divers meet at 4:30pm spending one hour to clean the beach. Two Fish Divers Gili Air teams up with local organization Trash Hero who believes, “We clean, we educate, we change.” At the end of the cleanup we weight what we collect in order for Trash Hero to document this global trash problem we are facing. As of June 2019 Trash Hero operates in not just Indonesia but 11 different countries worldwide with the goal to reach more and more people. We can’t just solve the global waste problem but we can try our best and just “pick it up.”
Our bi-weekly cleanup is no cost, no sign-up, just show up. During each cleanup we usually pick up an average of 100 Kilos per week in JUST one hour. That means that over the last two years Two Fish Divers Gili Air has collected almost 7,500 kilos of trash. We are strong believers that together we can make a difference and that just a little effort from everyone can go a long way. If you are ever in Gili Air on Thursday please come join us in making this incredible little island better than we found it.
This week we will be joined on our beach clean up current students from Denmark doing their PADI Open Water Course, first-time divers completing their PADI Discover Scuba Dive course, local guides Jen and Rozi.
