Today at Two Fish Bunaken Resort we saw a Banded Sea Krait from the boat on one of the dive sites. It was very clear visibility so we watched it as it swam through the corals about 1m below the surface. Maia stuck her gopro in from the side of the boat and managed to get a video of it too!! (Below)
Most people know Banded Sea Kraits as being very poisonous which is scary but the don’t usually interact with humans. We are too big for them to eat! They usually aren’t scared by us being in the water next to them and usually keep swimming and hunting along the reef. Try not to make them angry by blocking their way to the surface when they are coming up to breathe, harass or chase them. We see them a lot while snorkelling on the shallow tops of the reef. They aren’t fast enough to chase fish so they hunt in the crevices of the reef and can hold their breath for 15-30 min so are coming to the surface to breathe quite often.
It has been a little quieter this week in Bunaken so we have been doing a lot of Divemaster training with Yolanda. She has been busy practicing her rescue skills both in the pool and on the boat in between dives. It is good to practice rescuing many times with people of different sizes with different equipment to make it second nature. The PADI Rescue course is where you learn first how to rescue someone but you need to repeat some of it in the Divemaster course and complete an assessment. Learning to see problems before they happen and respond quickly and effectively can take a lot of practice. Yolanda did great on her final rescue assessment! You will hear soon from Yolanda as she is almost finished her PADI Divemaster Training in Bunaken.
Megan and Adam came for a day trip from Manado. They arrived just before breakfast and headed out at 8am for two morning dives before having lunch and returning to Manado. They saw black tip sharks, white tip sharks, pontohi seahorse, big puffer fish, yellow margin trigger fish, giant trevally and schools of red tooth trigger fish, mackerel and fusiliers. From the boat, Megan and Adam also saw the banded sea krait!
