We had the most fantastic time with Dominic, Ipan and the team when we went diving with them in the Secret Gilis. It’s such a quiet area – we were one of two boats on the water – and the coral is just stunning, the best we’ve seen. We also saw a few turtles and a beautiful array of fish.
Highlights of Diving South Gili’s
The village of Sekotong where our dive center is situated is only 20mins by boat to the South Gili’s, a collection of tropical islands that offer great diving. Also known as the Secret Gili’s, the most well-known and developed island is called Gili Asahan, the others such as Gili Layer and Gili Rengit are largely uninhabited.
Most of the dive sites around the islands are pristine coral reefs with colorful soft corals and crinoids, vast staghorn coral fields and huge table corals in the shallow parts, giant elephant ears in the deeper parts, giant sponge barrels along the slopes. These reefs harbour bright colorful tropical reef fish such as angel and emperor fish, damsel and butterfly fish and many more. The corals hide a variety of shrimps, crabs and of course nudi branchs. Our guide will help you hunt down also the pigmy seahorse, ghost pipe fish and frogfish. Also the green sea turtle, a variety of moray eels, blue spotted stingray, cuttlefish, squid, octopus, lion and scorpionfish, flathead crocodile fish are part of the scenery. Occasionally you will encounter a white tip shark.
The sea is fairly shallow, with sea temperatures of 26-30C and visibility of 20 meters. Only the months January and February might have a low visibility with max 10m due to the heavy rains.
Our Dive Boats
We have wooden and fiber glass diving boats. Our wooden boats are based on the design of long distance tuna fishing boats and are made by the boat builders in the village. All our boats are perfect for diving around South Lombok!
Our Dive Guides
We want you to be safe so all our dive guides are all trained to at least PADI Rescue Diver, and we encourage them to take their PADI Divemaster for which we provide financial assistance.
Dive Guide Trainee Program
We also have a dive guide trainee program to train new local dive guides – they need to speak good English, take the PADI Open Water Course, PADI Advanced Course and PADI Rescue Course, and have at least 100 dives before they can take guests diving.
Meet Ipan our Dive Guide
Ipan’s big smile is what he is best known for among our team – and our guests!
Ipan started diving 4 years ago and since then has built up an enviable experience diving daily on the beautiful reefs around our “Secret Gilis” (Gili Asahan and Gili Gede). As well as being an accomplished dive guide and spotter of marine life big and small, Ipan is also a fully qualified PADI Divemaster so you know you’re in safe hands both on the boat and underwater.
Ipan’s favourite dive site is “The Sands” for its easy diving and abundance of hidden macro-life, including his favourite critter of all time, nudibranchs.
Ipan is also one of our Aqualung trained equipment technicians here in South Lombok and he makeas sure that our regulators are all in perfect condition for diving on our perfect reefs!
The east side of Gili Renggit, “Batu Putih”, is an excellent site to explore for macro life. Surrounded by shrimps, ghost pipefish and glass fish, you dive along a slope lined with soft coral and feather stars. Diving “The Harbour” you can also find Blue spotted rays, cuttlefish, moray eels and a lot more!
The west side of Gili Renggit is also quite spectacular! Pantai Batu shows an abundance of hard coral and a fascinating stag horn coral garden in the shallows at the end of the dive.
Wave Corner offers rare species for the macro fan! The corals are populated with nudibrancs, ghost pipefish and colourful shrimps. Come and see if you can find the camouflaged frogfish, leaf fish, and other amazing critters!
After reaching around 16 meters on the slowly descending plateau we find landslide similar terrain. As we dive along this breakage, we are accompanied by emperor fish, big groupers and surgeon fish. The dive leads into a deeply gorging valley lined by heavy, massive coral formations. Once in the valley we find white tip reef sharks, schooling mackerel, schooling sweet lips, and an abundance of lively fish.
STAIRS TO MEDANG
Terracing down from 14m to about 35m you will experience a fascinating underwater landscape. Here you can experience the Indo-Pacific at its best. We’ve seen mantas, different species of sharks and plenty of lively reef fish in all colours and sizes. On top of the plateau it’s not uncommon to run into lobsters and turtles.
- Belongas Bay can be reached in 60 minutes car ride from our dive centre in Sekotong, South Lombok
- Some dive sites are located out of the bay where we have often high waves and strong currents. Other dive sites are protected by the bay and has milder conditions. The topography of most of the dive sites are pinnacles and enormous bolders.
- The dive site The Magnet is by now worldwide famous for the hammerhead sharks and its unpredictable currents. The Cathedral is the second dive site situated out of the bay with the same unpredictable conditions. Gili Sarang is the dive site where you can find schooling mobula and eagle rays.
