PADI Instructors have varied and exciting jobs in beautiful, tropical dive locations around the world.
They work on dive boats, exotic island resorts and sail the world on liveaboards.
Our IDC Manager is Restuning (also known as Unieng), she looks after all the email enquiries and also helps teach on all our IDCs. Originally from Indonesia, she spent 2 years in Holland studying in university, obtaining a Master in Science, and then working as an Urban Designer at Amsterdam city for 2 years. Diving has always been a passion, and she eventually decided to make the move back home and live her diving dream by becoming a dive instructor 12 years ago, at the same time becoming the very 1st PADI female Indonesian instructor in Bali!
Over the last 12 years she has dived all over Indonesia, is also a well-known yoga teacher trainer, and at one time even owned/managed her own small business in Amed, Bali. She speaks Indonesian, Dutch and English, and she got involved in IDCs 9 years ago. Currently a Master Instructor, Unieng is planning on becoming a Course Director next year, at which time she will become the 2nd female native Indonesian CD in Bali!
Her bubbly personality and professionalism have helped make her become one of the most popular and respectable dive professionals in the area, and we are very proud to call her part of the Two Fish Divers DMT/IDC team.
Our Course Director is Tinsley (or Tin for short), he is from China and speaks Mandarin, English, basic Cantonese and Japanese, as well as sedikit Bahasa Indonesia. He studied Architecture and Civil Engineering but because he had an interest in fashion design he decided to open his own textile company and started to design and manufacture top quality denim and canvas as well as other fabrics, exporting them to US, Europe and many Asian countries.
After a few years he decided to fulfil his ultimate diving dream, and he made the hard decision of leaving the business and moving to SE Asia. Over the last 10 years he has visited most of the famous diving spots in Asia. He has experience of working in the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia, and he founded the first ever multi-language dive center in Okinawa Japan that is still running today.
Tin has a 100% pass rate and he has a lot of fun on his IDCs. He is very strict with PADI standards but is also creative, always emphasising practical and realistic factors that should be taken into account when you teach your own courses. He will not only simply guide you to becoming a certified instructor, but his aim is to pass his passion on to you!
The PADI Assistant Instructor course (AI) is 4-5 days long. This course doesn’t have to be taken together with the PADI IDC, and can be taken at any time during the year.
Curious about teaching scuba diving? The PADI Assistant Instructor course (AI) is the first part of the full PADI Instructor Course (IDC). The second part of the PADI Instructor Course (IDC) is PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor course (OWSI). Taking both the Assistant Instructor course and Open Water Scuba Instructor course (plus the PADI Instructor Exam) leads to certification as a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor.
The whole IDC takes almost three weeks, however if you don’t have time for the whole Instructor course, you can achieve the PADI Assistant Instructor (AI) rating in just 4-5 days.
The AI Course is the most important practical part of the IDC as it is mainly concerned with your teaching skills for teaching PADI courses. Doing the AI Course outside the structure of the IDC gives you the flexibility to learn teaching skills over a longer period of time, without the rigid IDC timetable. The course takes 4-5-days and can be done as a stand-alone course or as an add-on to another course, for example the Divemaster Course / Internship.
Assistant Instructors can function as instructional assistants and independently conduct certain PADI programs. It is therefore also a great way to get more teaching experience before attending your IDC.
The things you taught me last year during my DM/AI internship proved very valuable indeed. Especially the practical experience I got working in a real environment and with real students. This was a great asset during the IDC. Thank you for giving me such a solid foundation for my professional diving career!
As a PADI Assistant Instructor you will start learning the PADI System of diver education. It is a great way to gain experience and build upon your abilities to organize and supervise scuba diving activities. During the Assistant Instructor course you’ll learn through self-study, quizzes, lectures and presentations. In the water you’ll have a skill review and assessment, workshops, plus an in-water rescue assessment. In the classroom your Course Director will work with you to develop your skills to prepare and deliver various candidate presentations to improve your teaching skills.
Qualifying as an AI allows you to progress on to the OWSI program and allows you to teach programs like the Peak Performance Buoyancy Specialty, Project Aware and also conduct certain portions of the Open Water Diver Course.
Prerequisites for Assistant Instructor Course:
The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is conducted over 12-14 days. Check out our schedule of IDC courses.
This is an optional course to prepare you for the IDC by covering the following:
The PADI IDC course contains the following:
A typical day of the IDC looks like:
Additional teaching workshops during the 14-day IDC include:
These workshops are NOT standard IDC practice. They are additional workshops added into Two Fish Divers IDC Programme that will give you more experience on teaching skills safely and efficiently.
Our overall objective is to teach you how to be a GREAT PADI Instructor.
Passing the IE is a secondary objective, it is NOT the primary objective, and this is what makes us different from other IDC courses. We believe that if you teach IDC students how to be GREAT instructors, then the IE is just a formality.
We run IDC programs in our different locations Bunaken (Manado), Amed (Bali), Lembongan (Bali) and Gili Air (Lombok). View the latest IDC Schedule
The Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT) Prep course is over 3 days and can be taken at the end of the IDC/IE or at any time during the year.
The Master Scuba Diver Trainer rating sets you apart from other dive instructors by showing your commitment to continuing your dive training and being prepared to help others continue their training as well. When your students wish to continue their training towards Master Scuba Diver level, you will be the instructor who can get them there, as you will be able teach 5 additional Speciality Courses as well as all other PADI courses.
Many dive operators prefer to employ instructors with MSDT rating, as the rating shows proficiency in teaching at least 5 Speciality Courses as well as 25 Open Water Certifications. You also get to teach specialty diver courses – which opens the door to lots of fun while working.
The MSDT Prep is a very practical program, and over the 3 days you will get training in 5 instructor specialty courses.
For each speciality, you will watch the professional DVD, this gives you the objective of the course and tips on how to teach it. There are some knowledge reviews to be done, and the Course Director will take you through some training exercises on land, before practicing on 1 or 2 dives.
Please select five Specialty Instructor Courses from the following list.
** You must hold user level certification before training for teaching these specialties
*** Please contact us for more information about becoming a Sidemount instructor
More specialty ratings available, please contact us for more information
This is run in Bunaken, Amed, Lembongan or Gili Air after our IDC. Fast-track to become an experienced instructor and get your first certs with the help and guidance of our experienced instructors.
Our Instructor Internship is split into 3 parts.
Our Instructor Internship will give you invaluable teaching experience, and you will complete your internship as an experienced instructor, making it much easier to find a full-time instructor job!
You will also get teaching experience in some of the best dive locations in Indonesia!
Many dive operations use the term ‘Internships’ loosely, and it may have different meanings from one center to another.
In some operations, internships are offered where the dive center provides the courses for free and then the candidates will work for free in order to pay back the cost of the course. It seems like a great deal to the students, but in reality the students do not get as much benefit or attention as they should. Some examples of such instructor experiences:
We do not this type of internship at Two Fish Divers for several good reasons. In our opinion, the Instructor course is a professional level in diving. Instructors should be treated with respect as future professional dive leaders, this is why it’s even more important that they are part of a professional organized Instructor Internship programme focused on their candidates and their training. This helps to shape future dive leaders as well as instructors.
At Two Fish Divers we try and achieve this with all our Instructor Internships. We do not offer “work off free courses”, but our Instructor Internship offers the candidates an opportunity to gain teaching experience under supervision and with professional guidance after their IDC.
The IDC Staff Instructor course is run over 12 days, and is conducted in conjunction with every IDC program.
In addition to all the courses you can teach as a PADI Instructor, as a PADI IDC Staff Instructor you will also be able to independently teach PADI Assistant Instructor courses, and assist PADI Course Directors in conducting IDCs and other instructor-level continuing education programmes.
You need to be a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and Emergency First Response Instructor before you can begin IDCS Course.
We make a charge if you are already a PADI IDC Staff Instructor needing more staffing credits. However we will not charge this fee if you bring a candidate to an IDC which you staff.
Our IDCs are run over our locations in Bunaken (Manado), Amed (Bali), Nusa Lembongan (Bali) and Gili Air (Lombok). No other dive centre can offer you all of these fantastic locations!
All of our locations are based on tropical-island dive resorts in Indonesia with world-class diving right on your doorstep – the world-famous reefs of Bunaken, the muck diving magic of Lembeh Straits, the mantas and mola molas of Nusa Lembongan, the world-famous sites near Amed such as Tulamben & the Liberty shipwreck, the schooling hammerheads of South Lombok, and the sites of Gili Air that are famous for their turtle mania.
We don’t like crowds, so we aim to have small class sizes on each IDC, giving you more attention from your course director and more chances to help in the dive center and get real-life experience.
If you did your PADI Divemaster course with us we’ll give you a 10% discount on our IDC, that’s a saving of at least IDR2,200,000!

The foundation of PADI instructor development is the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC). The program consists of two parts — the Assistant Instructor (AI) course and the Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program. Combining the three-day AI course and the four-day OWSI program into a continuous program makes up a seven day IDC.
Successfully completing an AI course allows instructor candidates to earn the PADI Assistant Instructor rating which authorizes them to function as instructional assistants and independently conduct certain PADI programs. AI course completion also qualifies candidates to participate in an OWSI program.
Successfully completing the OWSI program (or an entire IDC) makes candidates eligible to participate in a PADI Instructor Examination (IE).
The IE is a completely evaluative program that tests the instructor candidate’s teaching ability, dive knowledge, skill level, understanding of the PADI System, attitude and professionalism. Instructor candidates become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors only after successfully completing an IE.
PADI IEs are standardized, objective evaluations conducted by Instructor Examiners representing one of PADI’s international offices.
Once you are an instructor your training does not stop there. Various instructor-level continuing education courses are offered, these include Specialty Instructor training courses, Tec Deep Instructor training (TEC) courses, and Master Scuba Diver Trainer (MSDT).
Each IDC Programme is followed by the optional PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer Course (MSDT) over 3-4 days. See above for full details.
IDC Staff Instructor Courses train qualified Master Scuba Diver Trainers to conduct AI Courses and IDCs. These are conducted in conjunction with every IDC program.
Amazing. Loved the flexibility of learning at my own pace.
